Sweet Home Alabama $9.90 As formulaic, utterly inoffensive romantic comedies go, Sweet Home Alabama could be better, and could be worse. It’s a variant of Julia Roberts’s Something to Talk About, with all the same strengths and weaknesses, and Reese Witherspoon is definitely its saving grace. ? $15.98 Remember the old Timex watch slogan, “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking”? Well, the same could be said about Enuff Z’nuff. The group has been through a lot during its lengthy career — unwise fashion choices, changing musical tastes, record label snafus, seeing lesser-talented bands of its genre skyrocket — but the band is still rockin’ and rollin’, as evidenced by its 12th studio album, ?. While most veteran bands from the “glam rock ’80s” decided that a stylistic makeover was in order come the 21st century (cough…M? tley Cr? e), Enuff Z’nuff have stuck to their guns through it all. And ? is no different — power pop that is steeped deeply in Cheap Trick-esque twists and turns, and is also the group’s first record in years to include contributions from all four of its original members. If you make it past the purposely (one assumes) hard to take interlude of “Gorgeous,” you’ll find a fine pop gem — which sees Chip Znuff assume vocal duties, as well as such other similarly styled highlights as “Home Tonight” and “Harleya,” plus a fun album-closing cover of the Queen classic “Stone Cold Crazy.” The only downer regarding this solid set is that it will mark the last time guitarist Derek Frigo will appear on a new Enuff Z’nuff recording, as he passed away shortly before its release. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |

A Monograph On Fever And Its Treatment By Hydro-Therapeutic Means $12.09 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free.Excerpt from book:Section 3 NEEVOUS FEVER. VERSATILE FEVER. TYPHOID FEVER. The observation of these fevers brings to light forcibly the wisdom of the axiom that symptoms and not names should be treated. In the last century a vast deal of ingenuity was expended on the classification of diseases into genera and species and sub-species, in the apparent attempt to do for them what Linnaeus had done for plants ; and not to be deeply versed in the nosology of Cullen was fatal to the graduate as well as the undergraduate of medicine. By degrees, this pedantry has lost its hold on the schools and the medical mind generally, and men treat what appears in the sick frame rather than on the pages of the learned and ingenious Cullen. Within the last twenty years, however, the vision of medical men has been singularly acute in spying out typhoid fever in every instance of fever which could not be pronounced fiercely inflammatory in the symptoms as they are stated in the previous chapter of this work. Whenever there was changeable- ness of symptoms, contradiction of symptoms and sensations, varying pulse, varying heat, long drawn disease altogether, with predominance of nervous over circulating disturbance, the patient is almost invariably said to be suffering under typhoid fever!—such is the medical fashion. Another fashion is to attribute all typhoid fever to the inhalation of foul air from drains and organised matter in a state of decay. To read the medical writers in newspapers one might think that there was no other cause for the fever in question savethe bad smells in the streets and houses, and even that all fevers whatever came from that source. A vast amount of cheap fame has thus been acquired by persons who, else, would never have been heard of in the annals of medicine ; the columns of the newspaper make an ad… |

Charge!! $13.98 Their fanatical cadre will love that Charge!! ends the Aquabats’ nearly six-year album drought. But the combo’s hiatus has also refocused its musical and ideological attack. Intact are the pop references, zany in-jokes, and Batman villain fetishism. And the album has more exclamation points per syllable than the average lad’s mag cover. (One song is simply called “Waterslides!”) But Charge!! is much more rewarding musically. It doesn’t loiter awkwardly between punk, pop, ska, and broad humor — it keeps the pressure on with a catchy guitar- and keyboard-driven blend of anthemic choruses and appropriately squawky elements. Enjoyment of the Aquabats will still depend on your tolerance for gimmickry. But Charge!! has hooks and its eyes on the prize. A lot of guys have written songs about teenage dirtbags and losers getting lucky. But their subtext is usually a whiny one, like they know it’s all a fantasy. Not the Aquabats. “Nerd Alert!” is not a wistful sigh but a proud call to arms. MC Bat Commander reclaims the title clich? over a kicky cross of Nerf Herder and Sparks (with sly references to the Revenge of the Nerds soundtrack), and lyrics like “The revolution has begun/So raise your fist and take a stand/With your super cool wristbands!” align “Alert!” with the 21st century’s tech- and gaming-heavy “geek cool” movement. “Look at Me (I’m a Winner)!” is a shiny plastic Weezer/Cheap Trick romp; it has some terrific lyrical imagery in the line “Four radios blastin’ classic rock/And they’re pointing at you!” Meanwhile, “Meltdown!,” “Fashion Zombies!,” and “Plastic Lips!” are concise slices of new wave-inspired pop that retain that particular Aquabatian flair for the totally wiggy. Older fans might miss the horn sections or heightened theatrics. But Charge!! does geekdom proud. It proves it’s possible to put “hilarious,” “solid songwriting,” and “mechanical ape” in the same sentence. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |

Cheap Meat: Flap Food Nations in the Pacific Islands $55 “Gewertz and Errington unpack the aspirations and anxieties, calculations and controversies that inhabit an inexpensive cut of fatty meat. Following the trail of sheep bellies from slaughterhouses in Australia and New Zealand to the plates of Pacific Islanders, they evenhandedly map the divergent perspectives of commercial traders, government officials, and ordinary consumers acting within a contested material and moral economy. Cheap Meat provides a startling view of how global food markets fashion the bodies and identities of people everywhere.”–Robert J. Foster, author of Coca-Globalization: Following Soft Drinks from New York to New Guinea”Cheap Meat is a compelling example of how ethnography concerned with Oceania can elucidate broader questions in anthropology and the social sciences in general. Gewertz and Errington show the complexity of globalization by focusing on the most unlikely commodity. This work at once demonstrates how unfettered capitalism is able to use global circulation to literally convert one person’s trash to another’s treasure and how resilient Pacific Islanders refashion Western commodities to their own ends.”–Paige West, Curator for the Pacific American Museum of Natural History |

Come on Over [Australia Bonus Tracks CD] $19.99 Shania Twain’s second record, The Woman in Me, became a blockbuster, appealing as much to a pop audience as it did to the country audience. Part of the reason for its success was how producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange — best known for his work with Def Leppard, the Cars, and AC/DC — steered Twain toward the big choruses and instrumentation that always was a signature of his speciality, AOR radio. Come on Over, the sequel to The Woman in Me, continues that approach, breaking from contemporary country conventions in a number of ways. Not only does the music lean toward rock, but its 16 songs and, as the cover proudly claims, “Hour of Music” break from the country tradition of cheap, short albums of ten songs that last about half an hour. Furthermore, all 16 songs are Lange-Twain originals, and Twain’s sleek, sexy photos suggest a New York fashion model, not a honky tonker. And there isn’t any honky tonk here, which is just as well, since the fiddles are processed to sound like synthesizers and talk boxes never sound good on down-home, gritty rave-ups. No, Twain sticks to what she does best, which is countrified mainstream pop. Purists will complain that there’s little country here, and there really isn’t. However, what is here is professionally crafted country-pop (even the filler — which there is unfortunately too much of — sounds good), delivered with conviction if not style by Twain, and that is enough to make it a thoroughly successful follow-up to the most successful country album by a female in history. [The Australian edition has a completely different track order and features three bonus tracks: "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here" and different versions of "Love Gets Me Every Time" and "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)."] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

From St. Francis To Dante $14.95 PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION. THE present edition contains a considerable amount of fresh matter from Salimbenes chronicle, omitted from the first mainly for the insufficient reason that I had already published it elsewhere. The notes and appendices have been even more extended, especially on points where different critics seemed to think the eridence inadequate. Apart from the more obvious advantages of a second edition, an author must always welcome the further opportunity of explaining himself especially when he has struck for a definite cause and proroked hard knocks in return. To most of my reviewers I owe hearty thanks, and certainly not least to a Guardiaiz critic, whose evident disagreement with me on important points did not prevent him from giving me credit for an honest attempt to describe the facts as they appeared to one pair of eyes. In that recogtition an author finds his real reward after all, even Goethe was content to say, I can promise to be sincere, but not to be impartial. Genuine impartiality is one of the rarest of rirtues, though there have always been plenty of authors who shirk thorny cjuestions, or who concede points to the weaker side with the cheap generosity mhich impels a jury to find for a needy plaintiff against a rich man. Never, perhaps, was this kind of impartiality so common as at present, when to quote a recent witty writer the fashion is a Roman Catholic frame of mind with an agnostic conscience you get the medieval picturesqueness of the one mitlt the modern conveniences of the other. Helt Borte $15.98 Making as good on the label’s name as conceivably possible, in 2011, Smalltown Supersound reissued this obscure 2007 album by a duo from Vard? , a tiny fishing village at the northern tip of Norway. Regardless of the cosmic significance — or not — of this seemingly improbable event (it might have something to do with the fact that one of the duo is noted electro/disco producer Rune Lindbaek, who happens to have released a similarly minded album as one-half of Meanderthals, also on Smalltown Supersound), it’s certainly a boon for fans of slow, spacy, ambient synth music (Biosphere, Stars of the Lid, Tangerine Dream). In tritely predictable but nevertheless redolent fashion, Helt Borte sounds about as wintry, primordial, elemental, glacially paced, and remote as you would expect of sounds emanating from such a distant, arctic locale. Titling one track “Snowflakes” and filling it with placidly twinkling synthetic bell-tones may be pushing things a bit far –? or maybe not — but suffice to say this music will stand up to any sort of slumbering snowdrift/Aurora Borealis imagery you want to throw at it. So yes: Pechenga’s music may not be boundary-pushing, cerebrally stirring, or in any way original. At the same time it is, absolutely, haunting, entrancing, and lush, and not in a cheap or facile way, either. The basic musical methodology, throughout, rests on sinuous, slow-moving melodies and deep, thick synthesizer drones, often eerily dark and brooding (“Ununoktium,” “Pechenga,” “My Frozen Spirit”), sometimes ethereal and serene (“Ultima Thule”; “Hamningberg,” which is named for another, even tinier town in northern Norway). Sometimes other elements flit their way through, as with the languid, almost bluesy guitar figure which makes “Gitaro” (“guitar” in Esperanto) probably the most distinctive and memorable thing here, or the shards of harp splintering the title track, or even the occasional pan flute. Hype! $14.98 Doug Pray’s entertaining and opinionated documentary on the Seattle music scene takes the (admittedly unusual) position that the Grunge Explosion of the mid-1990s was the worst thing to happen to rock music in the Pacific Northwest. Hype! depicts Seattle as a town where a fertile musical community with a distinctive sound and style grew largely because it was ignored by the rest of the world. Once the unexpected success of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden made Seattle the rock capital of the world, drugs took hold, opportunists scrambled for the spotlight, and cheap flannel shirts became “grunge fashion.” The movie features revealing (and often hilarious) interviews with members of such groups as Mudhoney, the Mono Men, the Fastbacks, Seven Year Bitch, Tad, Girl Trouble, Gas Huffer, Dead Moon, and the Supersuckers, as well as performance footage of all these bands and informed perspectives from a number of behind-the-scenes figures. It also features a technically shaky but historically priceless clip of Nirvana’s first public performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Old links in a new chain: The unlikely resilience of corner stores in Bogota, Colombia. $49.99 This study is an attempt to explain why small, family-run neighborhood stores continue to dominate the food market in Bogota. Driven by the expansion of transnational chains, a ‘supermarket revolution’ has swept throughout the Third World, transforming food production and retailing. Colombia has been no exception. Supermarkets have grown considerably over the last fifteen years, and now control half of the food market share. Yet the expected demise of traditional retailers never materialized: in Bogota, more than one hundred thousand tiendas de barrio are the keystone of food provisioning for the vast majority of the poor. My central argument is that these stores persist because they are part of—rather than obstacles to—market modernization. Through the development of elaborate delivery systems, the food industry has put mom-n-pop stores at the center of its distribution strategy. The role of neighborhood stores varies across different commodities. I examined comparatively the supply chains of fruits and vegetables, beef, rice, and processed foods to identify patterns of production, distribution and retailing. Perishables are traded largely in spot-markets dominated by traditional wholesalers. Neighborhood store owners buy cheap, low-quality produce and meat at these wholesale markets thus transferring low prices to consumers. Processed goods (dairy, soft drinks, cooking oil and rice) are part of much more vertically integrated chains in which the industrial link plays the leading role. My key finding is that food industries, seeking to offset their weak bargaining position against supermarkets, strengthened their links to traditional retailers. The financial resources needed to attend to such an atomized universe are considerable, but they have allowed food processors to position their brands and attend their customers’ demand for small quantities and low prices. These findings question assumptions that food systems evolve in any predictable fashion. In |

Power $13.96 As riveting as Rhyme Pays was, Ice-T did hold back a little and avoided being too consistently sociopolitical. But with the outstanding Power, the gloves came all the way off, and Ice didn’t hesitate to speak his mind about the harsh realities of inner-city life. On “Drama,” “Soul on Ice” (an homage to his idol Iceberg Slim), “High Rollers,” and other gangsta rap gems, Ice embraces a first-person format and raps with brutal honesty about the lives of gang members, players, and hustlers. Ice’s detractors took the songs out of context, arguing that he was glorifying crime. But he countered that, in fact, he was sending out an anti-crime message in a subliminal fashion and stressed that the criminals he portrayed ended up dead or behind bars. Another track that some misconstrued was “I’m Your Pusher,” an interpretation of Curtis Mayfield’s “Pusherman” that doesn’t promote the use of drugs, but uses double entendres to make an anti-drug statement. (Ice has always been vehemently outspoken in his opposition to drugs.) In the next few years, gangsta rap would degenerate into nothing more than cheap exploitation and empty clich? s, but in Ice’s hands, it was as informative as it was captivating. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

In its original form, the album was purported to contain the last half of a performance at the Michigan Palace in Detroit, on February 9, 1974the band’s final live performance until their reformation in 2003. The performance was notable for the level of audience hostility, with the band being constantly pelted with pieces of ice, eggs, beer bottles and jelly beans, among other things, in response to Iggy Pop’s audience-baiting. Subsequent investigation of the master tapes and the 1988 release of the double album Metallic 2X K.O. reveals that the original album contained the last half of the February 9, 1974 show, and ope… More: |

Romance Of The Reaper, The $17.99 This is the story of our most useful business. It is a medley of mechanics, millionaires, kings, inventors and farmers; and it is intended for the average man and woman, boy and girl. Although I have taken great pains to make this book accurate, I have written it in the fashion of romance, because it tells a story that every American ought to know. The fact is that the United States owes much more to the Reaper than it owes to the factory or the railroad or the Wall Street Stock Exchange. Without the magical grain machinery that gives us cheap bread, the whole new structure of our civilization, with all its dazzling luxuries and refinements, would be withered by the blight of famine. This may sound strange and sensational to those who have been bred in the cities, but it is true. |

Selbstportrait $27.98 Krautrock pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius took electronic music to new places in his trail-blazing work with Cluster and Harmonia, but by the time he started his solo career in the late ? 70s, he was concentrating on subtler, simpler sounds. His third solo album, and first for the Sky label, 1979′s aptly titled Selbstportrait (“Self Portrait”) is an even more intimate, meditative outing than its predecessors, which sound relatively more polished in comparison. The record is something of a sonic diary, essentially consisting of ideas Roedelius laid down in an ad hoc, lo-fi fashion between 1973 and 1977 while spending time in Germany’s Weser Uplands region. In addition to his modest recording methods, Roedelius employed the most basic of musical tools to put these tracks together. Many of them are based around the tones of the Farfisa organ, with occasional interjections from other keyboards and a cheap-sounding rhythm machine. The pieces themselves don’t quite qualify as miniatures — they’re generally between three and five minutes long — but they’re still small-scale in their sound, structure, and intent. This is ruminative music, the sound of a man taking the time to set himself off a bit from the hustle and bustle of life and take a long, close look at both himself and his surroundings. While there’s more motion in some of these tracks than there is in, say, the contemporaneous output of Roedelius’ sometime-collaborator Brian Eno, one could still call much of Selbstportrait ambient music. It’s full of simple melodic motifs repeated with subtle variations, for an atmospheric, hypnotic effect, and if that’s not ambient, what is? ~ J. Allen, Rovi |
